Punta Cabalo Lighthouse: History and Views of A Illa de Arousa

The Punta Cabalo Lighthouse is one of those places that has become an inseparable part of the landscape of A Illa de Arousa. Overlooking the waters of the Ría de Arousa and surrounded by granite rocks, small coves and nature, this historic lighthouse has spent more than a century and a half watching boats pass by and witnessing the island’s maritime life. ⚓

Today, it is one of A Illa’s most recognisable landmarks and a privileged spot from which to enjoy the scenery. But it was not originally built as a tourist attraction: its location was chosen to fulfil an essential role for those navigating these waters.

Where is Punta Cabalo Lighthouse?

The Punta Cabalo Lighthouse is located in A Illa de Arousa, in the province of Pontevedra, in a privileged setting on the island’s coastline.

Its location offers a wide panoramic view of the northern part of the Ría de Arousa. From Punta Cabalo, you can see the waters of the estuary, the characteristic mussel rafts and, on the other side, the coast of O Barbanza.

The Concello de A Illa de Arousa itself highlights that from this spot you can see towns such as Ribeira, A Pobra do Caramiñal, Rianxo and Boiro, as well as the mountains of A Curota.

🌊 But if there is one thing that characterises Punta Cabalo, it is the combination of the lighthouse and the landscape surrounding it. Large granite rocks reach down to the sea and small coves appear around them, creating one of the most distinctive corners of A Illa’s coastline.

The History of Punta Cabalo Lighthouse

To discover its origins, we have to travel back to the mid-19th century.

Construction of the Punta Cabalo Lighthouse began in 1852, under the direction of engineer Celedonio de Uribe. Its location was no coincidence: this point on the island offered excellent visibility for sailors navigating the Ría de Arousa.

The lighthouse was lit for the first time on 19 October 1853. For decades, it served as a nighttime reference point for sailors and navigators, helping them find their way through waters that have been fundamental to the economy and everyday life of Arousa.

At that time, operating a lighthouse also required people responsible for maintaining it and ensuring that its light fulfilled its purpose.

Punta Cabalo was staffed by lighthouse keepers —traditionally known in Galicia as torreiros— until technological advances changed the way these maritime signals were managed.

What Was Punta Cabalo Lighthouse Used For?

Before modern navigation systems, lighthouses were essential reference points for vessels.

Their light allowed sailors to identify specific points along the coastline at night, find their bearings and navigate more safely.

💡 For many decades, Punta Cabalo Lighthouse fulfilled precisely this role: serving as a nighttime guide for sailors and navigators in the Ría de Arousa.

This becomes even more meaningful when we consider A Illa’s close relationship with the sea.

Generations of islanders have worked in fishing, shellfish gathering and mussel farming. The lighthouse, therefore, was not simply a beautiful building overlooking the sea. It was part of the everyday landscape of those who went out to work on the ría.

What is Punta Cabalo Lighthouse Used for Today?

Over time, navigation systems evolved and the lighthouse’s original function changed.

After various renovations and transformations, the building left its traditional role behind. Since 2007, it has housed a restaurant, while retaining much of the maritime character of the location.

The surrounding area has also become one of the most attractive viewpoints in A Illa de Arousa.

From here, you can see the mussel rafts, granite islets and a large part of the Ría de Arousa. Turismo Rías Baixas also highlights Punta Cabalo as a particularly attractive place to enjoy the scenery and sunsets. 🌅

Nearby, there is even another small curiosity: a sundial carved into a rock, one of the features visitors can discover while exploring this corner of the island.

Seeing Punta Cabalo Lighthouse from the Sea

Visiting Punta Cabalo from land is highly recommended, but there is another completely different perspective: seeing Punta Cabalo Lighthouse from the sea.

From a boat, it is much easier to understand its strategic location.

The lighthouse appears above the rocks as we sail along the coastline of A Illa, allowing us to imagine how sailors once saw it as they returned across the ría.
