We transported archaeologists for excavations in Areoso

From July to September, at Amare Turismo Náutico we had the honor of collaborating with the Monteagudo Foundation in a project as enriching as it was inspiring: the archaeological excavations in Areoso. Our team was responsible for the daily maritime transport of the archaeologists to the islet, in a mission that lasted six intense weeks of work ⛵.

The islet of Areoso: much more than natural beauty 🏝️

Areoso is that little Atlantic treasure that captivates with its turquoise waters and fine white sands, but what few know is that it also hides ancient mysteries beneath the surface. In one of its megalithic mámoas, the Monteagudo Foundation team focused their research with the goal of finding evidence of rock art, engravings, and prehistoric paintings.

The work in Areoso reminds us that tourism can also be a way to preserve, learn, and protect. For Amare, collaborating with these initiatives is not only a responsibility, but a natural extension of our commitment to a respectful and educational tourism model 🧭.

A daily bridge between sea and science 🧪

During those six weeks, our boats were the daily link between scientific knowledge and living nature. We departed from Illa de Arousa with absolute punctuality, ensuring each day a comfortable and safe transfer for archaeologists and technicians, with all necessary measures to protect both the team and the fragile environment of the islet.

Thanks to our experience and deep knowledge of the Ría de Arousa, we were able to adapt each trip to weather and sea conditions, avoiding unnecessary impacts and complying with environmental regulations. Access to Areoso is regulated by the Xunta de Galicia, and you can learn more about its protection here.

Science, history and sea: a powerful combination 🌊

What is being researched in Areoso could help us better understand the funerary rituals and symbolic expressions of our ancestors. Can you imagine prehistoric art preserved under that white sand? For the archaeology team and for us as logistical facilitators, this possibility is as exciting as it is revealing.

Collaborating on these campaigns also highlights another approach to nautical tourism: one that goes hand in hand with knowledge and conservation. At Amare we believe in tourism that leaves a mark, but a positive mark 🌱.

Did you know you can also visit Areoso? 🧳

In addition to collaborating with scientific research, we offer routes designed so that any visitor can enjoy the surroundings of Areoso with the utmost respect. This islet is protected and has limited capacity, so we manage all the necessary permits to make your experience safe and legal.

You can discover this unique environment through our Rúa and Areoso Route, where we combine history, landscape, and leisure, or if you prefer something more direct, we also have the nautical taxi service to Areoso, ideal for spending a few hours enjoying the so-called “Galician Caribbean” 🌞.

A commitment that goes beyond tourism 📚

This is not the first time that Amare Turismo Náutico has collaborated with scientific, cultural, or educational institutions. Our team, made up of professional sailors and local residents, knows every corner of the ría and shares it with pride and respect. For us, being part of this project has been a true pleasure ❤️.

Because beyond the routes and crossings, we also believe in the power of the sea as a space for learning. And it excites us to think that, in some way, we are helping to reconstruct the history of Galicia, journey by journey.

Would you like to live your own expedition in Areoso?

Although the excavations have now concluded, you too can set foot on the islet where our ancestors walked thousands of years ago. We take you there, tell you its story, and give you time to explore and connect with the essence of the place yourself.
