Areoso and Rúa: Two Hidden Gems You Can Visit This Summer

In the heart of the Ría de Arousa lie two dreamlike islands: Areoso and Rúa. A perfect blend of wild nature, maritime history, and breathtaking landscapes. If you’re looking for a different kind of summer experience in Galicia, this boat tour will take you to two unique spots that have yet to be overtaken by mass tourism.

At Amare Turismo Náutico, we offer an excursion that combines a guided tour of Rúa Island, with its rocky formations and panoramic views, and free time to enjoy Areoso Islet, known by many as the “Galician Caribbean.” It’s an ideal plan for couples, groups of friends, or families who want to enjoy the Galician sea in an authentic and sustainable way. 🌿⛵

Rúa Island: Lighthouse, History and Natural Viewpoints

Rúa Island is one of Galicia’s lesser-known spots, and that’s exactly what makes it special. This rocky island, located in the center of the Ría de Arousa, is a historic enclave with an old lighthouse and stunning 360º views. The guided tour along its natural paths lets you discover:

  • 🪨 Its unique granite formations
  • 💡 The story behind Rúa’s lighthouse, key to navigation in the estuary
  • 🌊 Panoramic views over the sea and mussel farms (bateas)

During the visit, our guides will share curiosities about the island, its role in traditional fishing, and the sea legends that surround it. The route is not difficult, but as it involves walking over natural rock, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. It’s not suitable for people with reduced mobility or babies.

Isla de Rúa

Areoso Islet: Turquoise Waters and White Sand

After visiting Rúa, we’ll head to Areoso Islet, one of the most stunning places on the Galician coast. Its crystal-clear waters and white sands have earned it comparisons with Caribbean beaches. But beyond its beauty, Areoso is a protected area due to its ecological and archaeological value.

🏖️ There are no buildings or services on Areoso. What you’ll find is a pristine landscape, perfect for swimming, barefoot walks, and disconnecting from the world.

🌱 As a fragile ecosystem, it’s vital to follow the rules: no collecting shells or stones, and no littering. We manage access permits so you can enjoy it legally and peacefully.

📸 Don’t forget your camera or phone—Areoso’s light is unique and your photos will look like postcards.

A Complete Boat Experience

The Areoso and Rúa route is done in small groups departing from O Campo port, in Illa de Arousa. Our boat is safe and comfortable, captained by experienced sailors who will guide you throughout the journey.

⏱️ Total duration is approximately 3 hours:

  1. Departure from Illa de Arousa
  2. Guided tour of Rúa (approx. 1h)
  3. Free time on Areoso (approx. 1h)
  4. Return to the port

The entire journey is scenic and relaxed, passing mussel platforms, islets and—if we’re lucky—even dolphins! 🐬

What Should You Bring?

We recommend coming prepared for a full marine experience:
